RUSSIAN VISITORS: Members of the Rotary Club of Newport-Irvine for 10

days hosted a group of 10 Russian middle managers who wanted to learn

more about American democratic institutions. The 10 Russians were part of

a group of 3,000 Russians visiting the U.S. this summer in a State

Department program initiated by Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and funded by

Congress to promote the understanding of democracy. Some 150 Rotary

districts around the U.S. were selected to host the Russian visitors.

Newport-Irvine Club President John Brainerd noted that Rotarians Frank

and Alice Mead coordinated activities for the group, arranging for tours

and visits to businesses from Whittier to San Clemente. Locally, the

Russian guests visited the Russian Orthodox Church, Olive Crest Home for

Abused Children, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Disneyland and a

variety of manufacturing plants and businesses.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Garden Grove) invited the Russians and their

local hosts to a reception at the Balboa Bay Club, and their visit to

Orange County concluded with a dinner party at the Newport Coast home of

Rotarian Leo Flores.

ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP: Adrianne Kosky, a June graduate of Newport Harbor

High School, was selected as the recipient of the Newport-Balboa Rotary

Club’s 1999 $4,000 scholarship, according to Club Scholarship chairman

Danny Frankel. A number of seniors from Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor

high schools applied for the scholarship and were interviewed. Kosky was

selected based upon community service, academic ability and financial

need.

The scholarship is paid at $1,000 a year and requires the recipient to

visit the club annually to report on their college experience. Kosky, who

graduated with a 3.99 grade point average, will attend the UC San Diego

this fall. For more than 25 years, the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club has

awarded one or more college-bound scholarships and more recently added

the awarding of vocational scholarships with a cumulative value of more

than $150,000.

CLUB NEWS: Newport Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club Triathlon Chair Bob

Cuyler reports the club realized $25,000 from the recent event, with

$15,000 going to designated charities and $10,000 to the Club for their

charitable activities.

Diane Pearce of the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club presented a $500

scholarship from the Club to Jim Hossfield, a Corona del Mar High

graduate who will be attending Redlands University this fall.

at the Santa Ana Country Club for a business meeting. 6:00 p.m.: The

Newport Balboa Rotary meets at the Bahia Corinthian to hear Ron

Wildermuth discuss “Desert Storm: A New Adventure in Public Relations.”

6:30 p.m.: The Newport Beach Lions Club meets at the Nautical Museum for

dinner and program.

THURSDAY -- 7:00 a.m.: The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club

meets at Mimi’s Cafe to hear Lion Ed Burchill on “Mountain Bicycling.”

Noon: Kiwanis Club of Newport Beach-Corona del Mar meets at the Bahia

Corinthian Yacht to hear Sue Gordon discuss “Take Out the Trash and Put

It -- Where?” The Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club meets at the Holiday Inn for a

program by Frank DeNito, Past International President of Toastmasters.

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor meets at the Riverboat for a business

meeting and induction of new members. The Newport-Irvine Rotary Club

meets at the Irvine Marriott to hear from Mitchell Higgenbotham.
