* Real estate executive Don Saltarelli of Orange was elected president of

the Orange County Fair Board of Directors for a one-year term at the

board meeting Aug. 19. The nine-member board is appointed by the governor

and sets policy for the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center in Costa

Mesa.

* Navy Seaman Benjamin G. Dugas, son of Cissy M. Dugas of Costa Mesa,

recently departed the Arabian Gulf while on a five-month deployment to

the western Pacific and Indian oceans aboard the aircraft carrier USS

Kitty Hawk, based in Yokosuka, Japan.

While in the Arabian Gulf, Dugas’ ship made a port visit to Bahrain

and three visits to the United Arab Emirates. The USS Kitty Hawk is

scheduled to make port visits to Australia and Thailand before returning

to Japan.

* Navy Seaman Recruit Thorin D. Mayba, a 1989 graduate of Estancia High

School in Costa Mesa, recently reported for duty at the naval hospital.

He joined the Navy in December 1998.

* Max Douk, a local restaurateur, signed on to organize and operate the

food service at the Legion facility, an eatery at 15th Street on the

Balboa Peninsula.

Douk brings decades of experience to the Legion. Born to a French

father and Italian mother in Casablanca during World War II, his cuisine

reflects a combination of two distinct cooking styles. He currently owns

and operates the Ma’Ma Mia restaurant on the boardwalk in Lido Village.

He was formerly a partner and chef at another Newport Beach favorite, the

Stuft Noodle.

* Martha Daniel, founder and president of Costa Mesa-based Information

Management Resources Inc., was named chairwoman for Women of Valor 2000

by the American Diabetes Ass.

The annual event, presented by PacifiCare, is held to honor the

accomplishments of four female leaders who represent the business world

and have helped better the community.

Daniel, whose information management consulting firm serves as a leader

in solving Y2K issues, is working to bring together a multitude of talent

and support to make the Women of Valor a successful fund-raiser for the

American Diabetes Assn.

* The board of directors of the Anaheim Convention and Visitors Bureau

Hospitality Sales and Marketing Assn. International, Meeting

Professionals Internationals, Newport Beach Conference and Visitors

Bureau and Orange County Concierge Assn. cruised aboard the luxury yacht,

“Just Dreamin” as guests of Adventures at Sea Yacht Charter and Culinary

Adventures. Both the cruise and cuisine were donated to provide an

opportunity for participants to network within the tourism industry.

* Teresa C. Vaught graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training

Corps Camp Challenge at Fort Knox, Ky. this year.

The cadet is a student at Claremont McKenna College and the daughter of

Milton E. and Kendall A. Vaught.

Camp Challenge is designed to give college sophomores, juniors and

freshmen who have not taken ROTC courses, the chance to enter the

program. Cadets received training in fundamental military skills, basic

rifle marksmanship, drill and ceremonies, small arms tactics and

communications.

Vaught graduated from Huntington Beach High School in 1997.
