Wetlands pickups get easier

Picking up trash and debris at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands has gotten a

little easier. A grant from the Anaheim/Orange County Visitors and

Conference Bureau to the California Coastal Commission allowed the Bolsa

Chica Conservancy to purchase two new E-Z Reacher tools and replacement

pads for 40 tools that needed repair. The Conservancy and the Amigos de

Bolsa Chica combined their grant request since they share the tools and

often coordinate the wetland cleanups together.

Foot-stompin’ music at the Pier

The city treats beach goers to free surf-side music by an eclectic mix of

performers at Pier Plaza on Sept. 26 with Bennie and the Swamp Gators and

T-Lou. Along with the four hours of music, which begin at 2 p.m.

Saturdays and noon on Sundays, the Pier Plaza Art-A-Faire on the upper

portion of the plaza features more than 50 vendors who specialize in arts

and crafts. Everything from fine art, handcrafted jewelry, candles,

handblown glass, clothes, incense and henna tattoos can be perused from

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Surf City resident honored

Lou Pena of Huntington Beach received the Professional Achievement award

from the Regional Center of Orange County for his work on behalf of

people with developmental disabilities.

Deputy D.A. named

Lillie Nicole Erlandson, a 1989 graduate of Huntington Beach High School,

and a graduate of Western State Law School in Fullerton, was selected a

Deputy District Attorney for Orange County.

Boys, Girls club chief goes to Duke

Tanya Grimes, Executive Director of Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington

Valley, was selected to participate in Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s

Thomas G. Garth Executive Leadership Program at Duke University in

Durham, N.C.

Surf City youth wins art contest

Brandon Ishimoto, a 7-year-old aspiring artist from Huntington Beach, is

one of 26 winners in Upper Deck’s national trading card contest. His

rendering of NBA player David Robinson of the San Antonio Spurs, along

with the 25 other winning entries, will be added as subset cards in Upper

Deck’s 1999 MVP basketball set, due out this month.
