Side Notes
Independent staff
Cancer Society Relay chair
Keri Gee Barnett of Huntington Beach served as chairwoman of the American
Cancer Society Relay for Life in Huntington Beach, which was held at
Golden West College in June.
Paying respect to vets
Mayor Peter Green declared Sept. 13-19 as POW/MIA Recognition Week. He
asked all Surf City residents to join with Vietnam veterans of Orange
County, as well as others veterans’ organizations, to honor all American
prisoners of war, soldiers missing in action and the families of POW/MIAs
who have endured immense sacrifices on behalf of the United States.
California Coastal Clean Up
The Simple Green EGBAR Foundation and the city are co-sponsoring a
cleanup day from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. It will be on the north side of
the pier, with free parking at the 1st Street, PCH parking lot.
Volunteers sign in at the starter’s table, pick up trash bags and receive
an assigned area of beach to clean. Pick sticks and gloves are available
while supplies last.
Trash and recyclables are to be brought to a central location, where they
will be noted, and the data will be sent to the California Coastal
Commission for an activity report on this statewide event.

Trim Those Shrubs
The Public Works Department is asking residents to keep their overgrown
shrubs, bushes and trees from obstructing public sidewalks in the city.
City ordinance requires there be at least 9 feet of clearance above
public sidewalks and parkways along arterial roadways in the city. When a
tree or other plant has roots on private property, but extends over the
street, there must be at least 13 feet, 6 inches of clearance.
The restriction is particularly important as school begins. Overhanging
shrubs can force children and other pedestrians to walk on the streets.
Dog Beach Gives City a Bone
The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach gave the city $5,000 in
August to help with finding the source of the beach contamination. At one
point, Dog Beach was the only beach open during the summer closures.
