Herb Shearer was known as The Windmill Man of Costa Mesa because of

his enthusiasm for constructing colorful garden windmills in his garage

on 19th Street.

Shearer moved to the area in 1918, initially taking a job in a pool

hall before drifting into carpentry and fishing work. It was only once he

retired that he began seriously to devote himself to the construction of

garden gadgetry.

The craftsman once had 12 different models of windmills available for

purchase, including the “Washer Woman” and the popular “Dancing Burro.”

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
