Five years ago:

Misty May helped Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team win the

Orange County Championship in a tough match against Laguna Beach, 15-17,

17-15, 15-4. May recorded a tournament record 29 kills.

Newport Harbor boys cross country runner Shahram DeZahd was named Daily

Pilot Athlete of the Week. DeZahd tied his personal best of 15:23 and

then beat it by running 15:12 in his first two meets.

After the Daily Pilot predicted a Calvary Chapel victory, a motivated

Estancia football team won, 24-6. “It helped psych us up a lot,” said

Estancia lineman Leo Muro. “I think we all said, ‘OK Daily Pilot, we’re

going to show you.”’

Costa Mesa beat Mayfair in football, 28-16, behind Charles Chatman’s two

touchdowns and 214 rushing yards.

With a 57-yard touchdown pass from John Giordani to Jon Benzinger the big

highlight, Newport Harbor beat Foothill, 28-7.

Ten years ago:

Newport Harbor alumni Shane Foley was brought in to play in No. 12 USC’s

42-3 win over No. 25 Ohio State in an intersectional football game after

Trojans’ quarterback Todd Marinovich was knocked out of a drive. He threw

the Trojans’ first touchdown to tight end Scott Galbraith.

Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team, ranked No. 1, edged El Toro,

8-7, behind five goals from Brandon Howard. Rob Pike had 10 saves.

Defending CIF football champion Corona del Mar topped Garden Grove, 21-3,

with Brian Lucas rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Estancia’s football team shut out Los Amigos, 26-0. Quarterback Dan Ucker

ran one in and Jeff Desandro returned an interception for a touchdown.

Defending state champion Corona del Mar’s boys cross country team easily

won the Laguna Hills Invitational. Chris Cannon finished 21 seconds ahead

of the second-place finisher. Darren Sutherland and John Murphy finished

third and fourth for the Sea Kings.

Orange Coast College beat Southwestern, 2-1, in men’s soccer behind goals

by Paul Oldham and Andy Strouse.
