I am calling regarding the Daily Pilot 103 most influential people

in Orange County. We feel that the OASIS Senior Center has been left out.

We have a membership of almost 6,000 people. We have over 100 classes and

some of them are free. We have lunches at a very nominal fee. We have

three vans that pick up and deliver people to doctor’s appointments and

also to the OASIS center and other appointments. We have Meals on Wheels,

which we offer for free. We have a social services coordinator that helps

people find housing and nursing care facilities. We loan out wheelchairs

and medical equipment for free, and we also offer free flu shots.

I’m calling about this DP 103. You left out probably one of the most

important people in Orange County. And that’s Carl Sinclair, the maestro

of the Civic Symphony Orchestra. He has done for Orange County art as

much as anybody else in the county. And I think it’s a gross omission to

have left him off.

I’m calling about the 103 most influential people of the Newport-Mesa

community. I noticed that Honey Thames was rated 97 and I want to tell

you that she was certainly underrated. She should have been a little more

toward the top. She’s a saint for our community.

Regarding the annual DP 103. What’s the purpose? It sure seems nothing

but snobbery. Especially considering the ones that get left out.

The 103 without Rodman. Come on. The most visible person in all of

Newport Beach. Unbelievable. I can’t believe you didn’t get Rodman on

there. Just cause he’s a bad boy? He’s no worse than the guys from Sugar

Ray, I grew up with them. Rodman’s mellow compared to them, so come on!

More people notice Rodman on the street than anybody from Sugar Ray.

Sells more shoes, does more ads, come on. I love Sugar Ray, but Rodman’s

got to rank up there.

I’m calling in reference to anybody who was overlooked in the Daily

Pilot Top 103. The criteria for 103 most influential people is very

broad. I think that the Mariners Elementary School Foundation should have

been included. It has raised over $200,000 to help the school and the

children in two years of existence. People such as Kay Davis and other

ladies at the school, who have spent every hour they can to improve the

school for the kids, are the ones who really influence everyone. I would

like to see some real heroes be given some recognition.

Hank Panian made an impression on her life

I was thrilled and surprised to see Hank Panian in your Millennium

Moment last week. Only surprised because the night before I had told my

husband and two sons what an impact Mr. Panian had made on my life. I was

in Panian’s California history class in 1969 at OCC.

Panian brought history alive to a student who, prior to that, was

taking history classes only because they were required to. Because of his

influence and unique wonderful way of teaching, I still have a thirst for

history. I’ll never forget “La Raza” and how as a WASP, I truly came to

understand the influence of Mexicans in California.

I left OCC after that semester to become a flight attendant. Panian

tried to persuade me to stay in school. Although I flew for 12 years,

loved flying and traveled extensively, Panian was right. I should have

stayed in school. This is a lesson I have passed on to my children. Hank

Panian should know that 30 years later, he is still influencing me.

Teachers do affect eternity.
