ISSUE: SALARY INCREASE

Vote: 4-0, with Peg Edey absent

Summary: The board approved a 4.75% salary increase retroactive to July

1, 1999 for psychologists and certified employees and management,

including the superintendent and assistant superintendents. The

district’s contribution to their health and welfare benefits was also

increased from $4,606 to $5,070. The estimated cost of the salary and

benefits raise is $195,268.

ISSUE: CLASS SIZE REDUCTION

Vote: 4-0, with Peg Edey absent

Summary: The board approved a resolution applying for $3,873,960 from the

Class Size Reduction Program for 238 classes and 4,590 students for

1999-2000.

The Class Size Reduction Program was established in 1996-1997 to improve

education for kindergarten through third grade. About $1.5 billion is

appropriated to the superintendent of public instruction to be given to

school districts as incentive money to implement a student-teacher ration

of 20-1. The program is administered by the California Department of

Education and is accepting applications for the current year.

Applications must be certified through a school district’s local

governing board and postmarked by Oct. 1, 1999. The district has

completed the application for class size reduction in grades those

grades, stating that the program has been implemented for 1999-2000.

ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

College View School instructional aide Nidia Schier was awarded the Wave

Maker Certificate of Achievement for her outstanding work in the

district. Schier has been a bilingual aide at College View for the last

six years and is considered an exceptional employee by all who work with

her. She also serves on the School Site Council and has provided valuable

input to the District English Learners Advisory Committee.
