It’s not often that CIF Southern Section Division I schools play a

day football game at the varsity level, but such will be the case

Saturday when Fountain Valley tangles with Servite at Cal State

Fullerton. The highly anticipated nonleague contest will kickoff at the

odd time of 2 p.m.

Said Servite Athletic Director Larry Walker about the game’s

unique starting time: ‘Fullerton’s stadium was in use Friday night,

Rosary High is holding its Father-Daughter dance Saturday night - and we

didn’t want to conflict with that, and our principal (Raymond Dunne)

didn’t want to move the game to the only other night (Thursday) that the

stadium was available, because it was a school night. So, we’re stuck

with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday. We’ve played a Saturday day game in the

past, but it’s something that we don’t like to do. This wasn’t done on

purpose, it was something we just couldn’t avoid.’...

Marina and Westminster will be meeting on the football field for

the 37th time Friday at Westminster’s Bill Boswell Field. The Vikings are

closing in on the Lions in the series, which Westminster leads, 19-16-1.

‘This truly is a friendly, classy rivalry, done in the right spirit and

with the right showmanship in mind,’ Marina Coach Mark Rehling said...

Fountain Valley’s defense has been tough in three games this

season. The Barons have limited two opponents, Dana Hills and most

recently, La Mirada, to a touchdown or less. La Mirada had entered last

Friday’s game with a 40 points per game scoring average...

Speaking of defenses: Marina has recorded at least one score on

defense in each of its first three games...

Defensive back Joe Winford’s 42-yard interception return for a

touchdown was the first of his Viking career...

Marina offensive lineman/linebacker Kyle Warren, who missed the

Upland game due to an MCL strain, will be back in action for the

Westminster game, Rehling said...

Huntington Beach’s stop unit also has been impressive. In a 7-6

win last week at Long Beach Millikan, the defense, spearheaded by junior

linebacker Justin Keadle’s four sacks, six tackles, and a pass knockdown,

scored the lone Oiler touchdown on Shaun Donahoe’s 16-yard return. The

defense also thwarted a two-point conversion attempt by the Rams in the

final minute to preserve the victory...

The turning point for the Oiler football program came last season

came in a 9-0 victory over Paramount, which came on the road, against a

successful program and perennial playoff participant. ‘That was probably

the best game we played overall last year,’ Huntington Beach Coach Tony

Ciarelli said....

Changing times: It wasn’t too long ago that both Ocean View and

Laguna Beach struggled on the football field. But now, as the teams

approach their Friday night showdown, both the Seahawks and Artists will

be looking to remain unbeaten. Both enter the game with identical 3-0

records. One more victory, and Ocean View will have surpassed last year’s

win total (3). Laguna Beach already has topped last season’s two-win

campaign, and is off to its best start in 12 years...

Ocean View comes into the showdown averaging a whopping 43 points

on offense. That averaged will be severely tested, however: a resurgent

Laguna Beach has yielded just 17 points in three games...

Ocean View quarterback Deshai Houston has thrown for 801 yards and

14 touchdown passes in the first three weeks of the season. Three

talented receivers - Patrick Campbell, Luka Levu, and Brett Crevda - have

contributed greatly to that success, Houston will be the first to tell

you.
