Man jumps from overpass onto 55 Freeway

A man jumped onto the Costa Mesa Freeway from the Bay Street

overpass Thursday night in an apparent suicide attempt.

Witnesses said they saw the unidentified man running and screaming

profanities on Newport Boulevard and Bay Street with his pants down

around his ankles.

The man also threw a glass bottle at a passing car, witnesses said.

The driver of the car appeared very frightened and drove away, they

added.

After throwing the bottle, the man climbed over a fence on Bay Street

and jumped into the shoulder of the northbound lanes of the freeway at

about 8:30 p.m. Traffic was not affected.

The man, who was conscious and speaking when paramedics arrived, was

taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, police said. His condition

was unknown late Thursday.
