Sailors top Marina, 2-0

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s girls field hockey team

improved to 5-1-2 in Sunset League play Tuesday, breaking away from a

second-place tie with Marina with a 2-0 victory on the latter’s field.

Katie Welbourn struck within the first five minutes of the game with a

goal off an assist from Paige Thompson, and some five minutes into the

second half, Bitta Jansma delivered the icer off Elizabeth Evans’ feed.

Susan Lear was credited with three saves, including two eye-openers in

the second half to preserve what is believed to be the first Newport

victory at Marina by way of a shutout.

Kelly Kraus and Nicole Dore were major defensive stars, while Thompson

was the key to Harbor’s offensive assault.

The Sailors have a bye on Thursday and return to action on Tuesday

when they host Huntington Beach.
