Sewage may not be your idea of fun, but a spokeswoman for the Orange
County Sanitation District loves her job.
Michele Tuchman spends much of her time these days answering questions
from reporters about the ongoing beach contamination. However, she also
gives tours to students visiting the treatment plant near Brookhurst
Street and Pacific Coast Highway.
She remembers showing off the plant’s “stinky” parts to a group last
November. After they finished the tour, she suggested some dinner
conversation for the children at an upcoming family get together.
“When you sit down at the Thanksgiving table, be sure to tell your
parents where you were today,” she said.
The Dog Gone Truth
The classic “one dog year equals seven human years” is simply not true,
according the County Community Animal Report. This particular formula has
crept into our popular culture, but it’s a poor method of estimating your
dog’s “human age.” The first year of a dog’s life equals 15 years. The
second year of a dog’s life equals 10 years. Every year thereafter is
equal to three human years. For example: A 10-year-old dog would be:
15+10=(3X8)=49.
New math?
Enrollment at the Huntington Beach City School District is 150 students
short of projections, according to district officials. Supt. Duane Dishno
said the district has increased by 100 students this school year.
Officials had predicted an increase of 250.
The district will therefore be bringing in $375,000 less than it had
expected from the state, for student attendance.
Dr. Dishno said the reason for the mistake is a mystery but is under
investigation.
