Longtime Newport Beach resident Donald Lewis died Thursday at his home.

He was 82.

Born in New York City to theatrical parents, he was schooled at St.

Peter’s Prep School and the University of Detroit.

In 1941, he entered the Navy and became an officer. He was later awarded

the Navy Cross for making a direct hit on a Japanese aircraft carrier in

his dive bomber.

Mr. Lewis president of Pacific Air Industries until it was sold to

Teledyne.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church of Newport Beach and

the Balboa Bay Club for 50 years.

The Smithsonian History of Aviation has published a book titled “Carrier

Warfare in the Pacific,” in which Lewis’ account of the battle of the

Philippine Sea is told.

“He will be missed very much,” said Mickie Lewis, his wife of 55 years.

A burial service will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11

a.m. Tuesday. The church is at 1441 W. Balboa Blvd.
