Newport waves to Los Alamitos

NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High club surfing team was a

74-52 winner over Los Alamitos Thursday, keyed by the exploits of Joe

Alani, who dominated his heat with a 12-point margin.

His top scoring wave of the day (7.5) was a head high right which he

nailed with three graceful cutbacks, combined with a floater off the lip.

Other shortboarders winning their heats were Rex Adams, Morgan

Collette and Ted Cook. Alex Knost won the longboard competition with

ease.

In the female competition, Heather Clark scored a first in her heat

with several clever maneuvers on her short board. The Newport girls just

got past Los Al, 12-9.

“The team looked awesome this morning,” said Newport Harbor Coach

Scott Morelan. “We always feel threatened by Los Al, but this time our

shortboarders got ahead of them at 0 Dark:30 and they just couldn’t catch

up.”
