Reyes, Townend post NSSA wins
Edison High’s Tim Reyes continued his successful start to his
senior year Wednesday by surfing his way to a first-place finish in the
Juniors Division (15-17) in the second event of the 1999-2000 National
Scholastic Surfing Association Explorer Season Southwest Conference at
Salt Creek in Dana Point.
Reyes, team captain of the Chargers, won his first three heats
before finishing second to Carlsbad’s Dane Johnson in the second of two
six-man semifinal heats.
Johnson went on to finish runner-up to Reyes.
Former world champion Peter Townend of Huntington Beach bested a
seven-man field, which also included Huntington Beach’s Steve Weaver, to
win the Super Seniors (45 & up) Division.
In the Masters (25-34) Division, Seal Beach’s Chad Wells won the
event, with Seal Beach’s Jason Shook placing fifth.
In a Seniors (35-44) Division race that was won by Kelly Gibson,
Huntington Beach’s Dean Quinn finished third overall. San Diego’s Nicole
Grodesky won the Womens (all ages) Division, which also included a third-
and fourth-place finish by Liz Kampen and Heidi Tschauner, respectively.
The Menehuene (12 & under) Division went to Del Mar’s Jensen
Hassett, with Seal Beach’s Chris Waring and Chas Chidester finishing
second and sixth, respectively, and in the Bodyboard (all ages) Division,
Fountain Valley’s Tadaomi Okamura was second and Huntington Beach’s Shawn
Daoud finished fourth.
Other winners included San Clemente’s Travis Mellem in Boys
(13-14), Mission Viejo’s Matt King in Mens (18-24), and Laguna Niguel’s
Travis Northey in Longboard (all ages).
