MILLENNIUM MOMENT

Ruthelyn Plummer is known to Newport-Mesa residents as the woman who was

elected mayor of Newport Beach in 1990 after serving on the city council

through much of the ‘80s.

But Plummer is also a notable figure simply because her family has been

in the area for longer than most. She is an eighth-generation

Californian, a native of the Balboa Peninsula and has lived in Newport

her entire life.

During World War II, Plummer worked as a riveter at a McDonnell Douglas

plant, and says she still finds herself inspecting the rivets on

airplanes before she boards them.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
