NEWPORT BEACH - Host Newport Harbor High’s freshmen boys water polo

team opened the Gray Lunde Tournament with a 10-2 win over Tustin before

losing to Edison, 5-2, in the second round Thursday.

In the opening game, Newport Harbor (10-7) crushed Tustin, 10-2. After a

close first quarter ended with Newport Harbor holding a 2-0 lead, the

Sailors blew open the game with six goals in the second.

Triton Metodieu and Nathan Weiner each scored twice in that quarter and

Ryan Bean and David Schweirchet both had one goal during the run.

Metodieu ended up with three goals to lead all scorers. Goalie Ryan

Winthrop’s strong game headed Newport Harbor’s defense.

In the second game, Edison’s stifling defense threw a monkey wrench into

the Sailors’ offense. Newport Harbor mustered no more than three shots as

the Chargers took a 5-0 lead after three quarters.

Edison peppered Winthrop with a barrage of shots to keep Newport Harbor

on its heels. Winthrop got six saves, but Edison had too many easy shots

not to convert.

The Sailors came alive in the fourth quarter, getting seven good shots

and limiting Edison’s offense.

Newport Harbor finally got on the board halfway in that quarter when

Weiner was fouled on a break and converted the ensuing penalty shot.

Jonathan Huang also added a goal at the end of the game for the Sailors

to close the lead. But Newport Harbor’s offensive explosion came too

late.

“In the last quarter, we had a good rally,” Newport Harbor Coach Les

Cutler said. “I was proud of our spirited play. I told my guys they can

still come back in the fourth quarter, and they raised their level of

play.”

Newport Harbor’s next game in the tournament is on 8 a.m. Saturday at

Newport Harbor High.

Play continues today at Newport. Corona del Mar meets Fountain Valley

in a 3:45 game.
