Muldoon’s needs time to open capsule

NEWPORT BEACH -- In 1974, the Smyth brothers were so careful when they

buried their time capsule in Muldoon’s Irish Pub that now, 25 years

later, no one can dig it out of the brick wall.

Organizers who planned the official opening of the 25-year-old time

capsule, which will be witnessed by Newport Beach Mayor Dennis O’Neil,

have postponed the opening until next month.

“We have to have it architecturally done,” said Richard Kaplan, spokesman

for Muldoon’s. “We don’t want to damage the building’s structural

integrity.”

Despite the setback, Muldoon’s will still celebrate it 25-year

anniversary with a performance by The Young Dubliners.

“They are the bad boys of Celtic rock,” Kaplan said.

He added that the pub plans to open the capsule before the end of the

year.

If not, since the brothers who built the bar have passed away, the

secrets contained in the time capsule may remain with them for eternity.
