A TASTE OF SAGE: Sage Restaurant in the East Bluff Shopping Center

and Robert Mondavi Wines have joined with Gamma Tau Gamma of Alpha Chi

Omega for a fund-raiser at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to benefit the Human Options

and the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. Award-winning Sage chef Richard Mead

will cook up a variety of Sage specialties and Mondavi will provide a

tasting of their coastal wines. Tickets are $25 per person and can be

NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE: Nine members of the Exchange Club of

Newport Harbor gave 50 kids an unusual and fun tour of Newport Harbor on

the National Day of Service, Oct. 23. The kids came from the Orangewood

Home for Abused Children, Concept 7 (Foster Home Agency) and Boystown of

Orange County. Member Seymour Beek donated the use of one of the Balboa

Island ferries for a two-hour cruise of the harbor.

JAPANESE STUDENTS VISIT: Four junior high school students from

Okasaki, Japan, and two teacher/chaperons visited Newport Beach and were

hosted by four local families, the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club and members

of the Newport Beach Sister City Assn. Rotary Club president Jim Sirkin

said four local junior high students travel to Okasaki in the summer for

a visit and then host the Japanese students.

Jonathan Clements and parents Scott and Marjorie hosted Masahiro Kamiya;

Mark Aguliar and parents Louis and Kathye hosted Motofumi Nagai; Karlin

Meehan and parents James and Kathleen Meehan hosted Yuga Sugita; and

Danielle Murphy and Mrs. Linda Baker hosted Momoko Iwase. The chaperons,

Mrs. Michiyo and Mr. Yataka Okada, were hosted by Karen and Edward

Ollila, who traveled with the Newport Beach students to Okasaki.

The Okasaki students visited local junior high schools, Newport Beach

City Hall, the public library and had a lot of time to learn about

American family life. On one evening, all gathered with members of the

Rotary Club and Sister City Assn. for a traditional American barbecue and

the unique American experience of pumpkin carving at the home of Rotarian

Moe and Dorothy Hamill.

The exchange program has gone on for more than a dozen years and Rotarian

Wendell Fish noted that for the first time, the city of Okasaki this

year has adopted Oct. 30th as pumpkin-carving day. A new tradition has

been started in Okasaki, thanks to the youth exchange program.

meet at Zubie’s Chicken Coop for a business meeting.

WEDNESDAY -- 7:15 a.m.: The South Coast Metro Rotary Club will meet at

the Center Club. Newport Harbor Kiwanis Club meets at the University

Athletic Club. Noon: The Exchange Club of Orange Coast meets at the Bahia

Corinthian Yacht Club. Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor meets

at the Santa Ana Country Club to hear International Board member Dawn

Marie Lemonds. 6 p.m.: The Newport Balboa Rotary meets at the Sea Scout

Base for a Vocational Visitation. 6:30 p.m.: the Newport Beach Lions Club

meets at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum.

THURSDAY -- 7 a.m.: The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club

meets at Mimi’s Cafe for “Getting to Know Eric Anderson.” Noon: Kiwanis

Club of Newport Beach-Corona del Mar meets at the Bahia. The Exchange

Club of Newport Harbor meets at the Riverboat for a business meeting. The

Newport-Irvine Rotary Club meets at the Irvine Marriott to hear Irvine

Mayor Christina Shea. The Costa Mesa Kiwanis Club meets at the Holiday

Inn to hear Peggy Murray on Welfare to Work Program.
