At issue: The city is seeking the community’s opinion on ways to revamp

Beach Boulevard.

Since Beach Boulevard is the major thoroughfare and main entrance to

Huntington Beach, it should have a sense of arrival with that look that

tells you that the beach is just down the street (“Seeking a street

revamp,” Oct. 21).

Many communities have successfully used entrance monuments in addition to

lush landscaping. Landscaping the medians with stately palms, tropical

plants and signs to welcome visitors would be a good idea.

We already have flags, and that is a good start. Using a surf or seabird

motif on the signs would help promote the coastal resort image.

Consistency in building styles and colors should be encouraged, but not

at the expense of a “cookie-cutter,” Irvine look.

Huntington Beach should look like a fun place to be. It’s the quirkiness

of this town that gives it its charm.

Why does the city attack problems after they’ve happened?

Beach Boulevard at Talbert has a pawn shop, Condom Revolution, and a palm

reader. And what was not mentioned in the article is that the all-nude

strip club that is on the way. I’m just wondering why ordinances weren’t

passed in the first place to prevent such businesses from going in.

They’re trying to fix that type of stuff now that the city is trying to

force a Wal-Mart down the throats of residents in that area, which will

also impact Beach Boulevard.

The next revamp topic will be how to deal with all the gridlock on Beach

Boulevard.

Beach and Edinger, northeast corner under the freeway -- I don’t know

who’s responsible for cleaning that mess up, but it’s disgusting. You’ve

got trash and litter.

That’s the way I get on the freeway, and every time I see it, I think,

who? Why? Offramps and freeways in other cities are being renovated and

look beautiful, with palm trees. Ours is disgusting.

I would like to see a limit on the size and amount of signs on Beach

Boulevard. I don’t like to see four signs for one business or a huge sign

towering over all the others. Some kind of uniformity would be great

along that strip.

I am a lifelong resident of Huntington Beach. I know that Beach Boulevard

needs some work, and I know exactly what it needs.

Beach Boulevard is the main artery of the city. It should give a

welcoming feel. I noticed that on most of Beach, the center islands are

just plain, dirty, rocky concrete.

The new image should be to plant large palm trees with lights that shine

up on them at night, giving the trees that nice illuminated look.

I encourage the revamp of Beach Boulevard.

I live in Huntington Beach and avoid the boulevard based on traffic and

appearance.

When considering what should be done, why not copy what Anaheim is doing

on Harbor Boulevard around Disney? The routes are very similar. Harbor

Boulevard has Disney and hotels. Beach has the ocean and car dealerships.

I would like to see more trees and and plants to block the view of the

cement environment we live in.

I could withstand looking through a tree for a street sign rather than

looking at a strip mall sign and a power line to know where the street I

have to turn down is.

The city of Cypress recently has redone a major strip as well.

Regardless of what is going to be done. I would like to see two other

major streets, Edinger and Warner, built with the same look and feel that

will be done to Beach Boulevard. It will show the city is together and

not as disjointed as it seems now.
