The Huntington Beach City School District board of trustees adopted its

goals for the 1999-2000 school year this week.

The four-point program focuses on improvement of student achievement,

increasing technology-related staffing needs, developing a plan for

school facilities modernization and preventing school violence.

To increase student achievement, the district plans to target

low-performing students to help them advance along with their peers.

The board also intends to focus on instructional strategies that promote

good character and citizenship, in addition to traditional scholastic

skills.

Goals include purchasing new equipment and software, and upgrading

current computer systems to strengthen the district’s technological

standing.

Trustees also called for services for students thought to be at risk for

school violence and academic failure.

Supt. Duane Dishno said the board goals provide a common sense of

direction among schools and departments, and help link staff energies and

district resources.
