TONIGHT’S GAME

Marina vs. Esperanza Vikes by 1

(at Valencia High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington Beach vs. Los Alamitos LA by 10

(at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.)

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Fountain Valley vs. Edison Chargers by 2

(at Orange Coast College, 7 p.m.)

Santiago vs. Ocean View OV by 6

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

And here’s why...

Red-hot Marina High hits the road for a critical contest with a

hungry Esperanza team looking to rebound from last week’s loss to Edison.

A victory by the Vikings assures them of no less than a tie for the

Sunset League title; the Aztecs, meanwhile, are looking to stay alive in

the race for a playoff berth. If Marina’s option game is on and the

defense continues to play they was it has the past month, then the

Vikings could be tough to beat. However, Esperanza features a potent

passing game, and the Vikings must find a way to contain wide receiver

Ryan Murray. Last year: Esperanza, 49-33...

Huntington Beach High will need its best performance of the year

if the Oilers hope to upend Los Alamitos. A victory would be the Oilers’

first in league play, but it won’t come easy: the Griffins are bent on

bouncing back from last week’s loss to Fountain Valley, and need a win to

stay in contention for the league championship. Los Al probably has too

many weapons for the Oilers to handle, although Huntington Beach does

pride itself on its defensive game. The Oilers, however, will need to

come up with a big offensive game if they are to entertain any type of

upset plans. Last year: Los Alamitos, 24-10...

You can throw out the records when Edison High and Fountain Valley

High square off in their annual donnybrook. This high-charged series

figures to add another exciting chapter Friday, as both teams field

potent rushing attacks. The edge on offense goes to Edison because of its

passing game, but the Barons get the edge when it comes to defense. This

game, as usual, should go down to the wire. Last year: Fountain Valley,

42-28...

Ocean View High takes a break from Golden West League action to

host Santiago High. The Seahawks, smarting from last week’s loss to

Westminster, should run it up on the Cavaliers, but the defense will need

to shore things up if Ocean View is to collect victory No. 7 on the

season. Last year: teams did not meet.
