For 20 years, William D. Ray was the chairman and chief executive officer

of International Bay Clubs, the company that owns the Balboa Bay Club and

the Newport Beach Country Club. Ray, who had been orphaned at an early

age and ran away from his foster home to join the National Guard,

eventually became known as a savvy and quietly powerful businessman.

Ray was an enthusiastic sportsman and an advocate for the conservation of

natural resources. He was given an award by the Dale McIntosh Center for

the Disabled for his work with disabled children and was posthumously

given the Ken Sampson Annual Award by the Orange County Coast Association

for his civic and charitable efforts. He passed away in 1991.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
