Sailors fall in shootout
HUNTINGTON BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s girls field hockey team
plays for third place Saturday against Huntington Beach in a 3 o’clock
match at Pleasant View School in Huntington Beach following a day of
great defense Thursday, only to see the effort fall in vain in a shootout
after the Sailors and victorious Marina battled through regulation and
overtime in a scoreless fashion at the Tournament of Champions
semifinals.
“We’ve done well,” said Newport Harbor Coach Sharon Wolfe, who saw
here team outshot from the field overwhelming, yet virtually everything
host Marina had to offer offensively, the Sailors had an answer.
Left back Sarah Green and goaltender Susan Lear (16 saves) were the
central figures, but center back Kelly Kraus, right back Nicole Dore,
sweeper Shirin Oskooi and outside back Allison McKenzie all shared in the
near-miss.
Marina connected twice in the shootout to finish it off, and will meet
Edison at 1 p.m. Saturday for the title.
Newport (9-3-4) meets Huntington Beach for third place. The latter
lost to Edison, 1-0.
