NEWPORT-MESA -- It will be a night of policy setting for the Newport-Mesa

Unified School District. Four of six items up for discussion at tonight’s

board meeting involve the approval of policy and procedures.

After an update from Mike Fine, assistant superintendent of business

services, regarding the facilities master plan and a proposed

reconstruction of the district’s schools, the board will debate changing

a number of its governing rules and regulations.

A subcommittee made up of board members Wendy Leece, Dana Black and

Martha Fluor has been studying the board’s policies and have come up with

recommendations for change.

Among the recommendations, the trio wants to see the district’s rules

cross-referenced with its strategic plan, to make it easier to move

between the documents, and wants to ensure that the rules that refer

directly to government, legal and education codes are up to date and

correct.

They also are proposing that policies be renumbered to align with those

of the California School Boards Assn., to avoid possible confusion.

The board will also vote on allowing the Associated Student Body to have

a checking account through the Orange County Teachers Assn., and will

hear a presentation by Newport Heights Elementary School.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the district office, 2985-A Bear Street,

Costa Mesa.
