Mary’s lunch pick

Mary Furr

Where: 14896 Springdale St., Huntington Beach

Specialties: 19 sandwiches; regular 6-inch for $3.25, large 9-inch for

$4.25, five bread choices, four salads.

Drinks: Sodas, 70 cents, juice, 95 cents; no coffee.

Atmosphere: A very clean, utilitarian, one-man operation with order

counter, two inside tables, one outside. It’s a second career for owner

Jeff Greenburg, a former bartender and truck driver who hauled dirt from

a big pit where the Huntington Beach library now stands. Started with

Chicago Hot Dog stand in Garden Grove and opened this small place in

1998. Turkey, avocado and bacon sandwich spread with avocado has bacon,

layers of folded turkey with tomato, pickle and shredded lettuce -- fresh

quality stuff you nibble down to eating size. Plump juicy hot dogs from

Vienna Beef are smeared with zesty mustard. Beware of tiny yellow peppers

that bite, and a bun too fragile for all it holds. The fat polish sausage

is superior. This is kid food for grown-ups.
