ISSUE: OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board of trustees vote to approve individual contracts

between the district and Irvine Therapy Services.

The new contracts with Irvine Therapy provide for short-term occupation

therapy.

All of the services are for district students eligible for special

education services and were deemed necessary by their Individual

Educational Program teams.

ISSUE: SCHOOL BUS FEES

Vote: 3-2, with Robert Mann and Shirley Carey opposing

Summary: The board approved a district plan to charge parents for busing

from students’ homes to their schools.

The payment program is expected to begin on Jan. 31, 2000. The fees

collected from the program will only cover a portion of the total cost of

transporting the students, according to district officials.

The basic charge of $1.00 per day for a round trip will help the district

sustain the program while it faces limited funding resources.

Total costs to parents for the year will be about $180 per student and

families with multiple students in the district will not be asked to pay

more than $360.

Parents will be sent an application that they must submit to the district

by January 15, 2000, if they want their children to be eligible for the

program.

ISSUE: AGREEMENT WITH MARINE INSTITTUTE

Vote:5-0

Summary: The board approved a contract with the Orange County Marine

Institute for fourth-grade students at the new Huntington Seacliff

School.

It will be the school’s first year of participation in the program.

On Jan. 27, 2000, about 90 students from Huntington Seacliff will

participate in an overnight field trip to the hills of the Cleveland

National Forest.

The objective of the program is to give students an experience with the

daily lives, adventures and accomplishments of those who have lived in

California.

They will begin with the study of prehistoric Indian survival and thread

their way through time into the present day.

ISSUE: AGREEMENT WITH LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE

Vote: 5-0

Summary: The board unanimously approved a consultant agreement between

the Laguna Playhouse and Eader Elementary School.

On Mar. 24, the Laguna Playhouse will present “By the Great Horn Spoon”

to fourth- and fifth-grade students at Eader School.

The play augments the fourth- and fifth-grade curriculum in history,

social studies, and literature.
