FRIDAY’S GAMES

Ocean View vs. Kennedy Irish by 8

(at Western High, 7:30 p.m.)

Marina vs. Eisenhower Eagles by 12

(at Eisenhower High, 7:30 p.m.)

Fountain Valley vs. LB Poly Poly by 13

(at Vets Stadium, 7:30 p.m.)

And here’s why...

Two teams with identical 7-3 records square off when Ocean View High

meets Kennedy at Western High’s Handel Stadium. The Fighting Irish

feature a strong passing game with the pass-catch combo of Geoff

Etherson-Steve Yaden, and balance that out with the rushing of leading

ground gainer Kelvin Beatty. The big question here, however, is how well

Ocean View will bounce back from last week’s 78-7 loss to Tustin. The

Seahawks have the talent to garner a first-round win, but need to put the

Tustin debacle behind them in order to do so...

It will be a battle of mirror offenses when Marina High takes on

Eisenhower. Both schools favor the rushing game and seldom use the pass.

The Eagles, as usual, have plenty of speed and are physical on defense.

If the Vikings can contain that speed in the backfield and hold on to the

football, then they have a good shot at the upset. If not, then

Eisenhower moves on to round No. 2...

Fountain Valley High’s reward for receiving a playoff wild-card berth? A

meeting with unbeaten and top-seeded Long Beach Poly. The Jackrabbits are

athletic, quick and right now, playing better defensively than on

offense. The Barons will have their hands full trying to contain Poly’s

weaponry and will need their best effort of the season to advance to the

next round.
