Women’s golf: Pirates finish third in State

AUBURN - On one of the toughest courses in the state, Orange Coast

College managed to take third place in the 1999 California Community

College Ladies Golf State Championships last weekend at Auburn Valley

Country Club.

“This group is one of the best teams I’ve ever coached from top to

bottom,” Coach Gordie Fitzel said. “They sure made the coach look good,

but it was all them.”

Jennifer Tunzi shot a two-day total of 163 to lead the Pirates’

fivesome, but Fitzel was especially happy for Robin Shaft and her

second-day score to 78.

“That was the first time in her career her that she has broken 80,”

Fitzel said. “She sure picked a great time to do it, playing against the

best in the state on a very tough course.”

First place went to Mt. San Antonio College with a team total of 671,

followed by Medesto College (702), OCC (709) and Fresno City College

(737).

“It was probably the hardest course we’ve played all year,” Fitzel

said of the par 73 course. “It was a very hard putting course with

extremely firm greens. Very similar to Pinehurst No. 2; you hit them in

the wrong place and they could roll right off.”
