Students at Newport Harbor High School are trying to reform the “zero

tolerance” policy.

The policy calls for any students found in the possession or under the

influence of drugs or alcohol to be transferred immediately to another

district.

Students at Newport Harbor say that this policy is not effective as it

is, and want to see change.

The Student Political Action Committee is holding a forum Dec. 14 to

share their ideas for change and hear what the community has to say. They

have invited school board members, the mayors and police chiefs of Costa

Mesa and Newport Beach, faculty, staff, parents and the community as a

whole. The forum will be at St. Andrews Church, across from Newport

Harbor High School at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14.

OCC seeks some holiday generosity

The holiday season is upon us and OCC students have begun their annual

Angel Tree Project campaign to collect Christmas gifts for needy and

abused children in Orange County.

Sponsored by the Associated Student College Life office, Angel Tree

Project collected almost 3,200 gifts last year, said college life

Director Barbara Newbern. Their goal this year is 3,500.

Unwrapped gifts may be dropped off at the Associated Students College

Life office in the OCC student center, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to

9 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gifts will be collected through Friday

Dec. 15.

Assistance League grants child-care scholarships

OCC was awarded $10,000 from the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa. The

contribution will be used to provide child-care scholarships for

low-income, working families for the 1999-2000 academic year.

The Newport-Mesa Assistance League, one of 104 nationwide, has

contributed a total of $30,000 to OCC’s Early Childhood lab and was the

first chapter to initiate a scholarship program for child care. The OCC

child-care lab provides a setting in which college students can train to

be teachers of infants, toddlers and preschool children.
