In a showdown Saturday for the league championship in AYSO Division

5 girls Under-10 Division play, the Backstreet Girls held off the Dirty

Rotten Strawberries, 2-1, to win the division crown in a well-played

match at Payne Elementary School.

Jean-Carla Escobar broke a scoreless second quarter tie when her penalty

kick sailed into the right corner of the Dirty Rotten Strawberries’ net

to give the Backstreet Girls a 1-0 advantage. That lead stood into the

third period before the Strawberries drew even, but the tie didn’t last

long as Taryn Cretikos’ kick soared over the head of the Strawberries’

goalie and into the net for a 2-1 lead.

The Backstreet Girls’ defense, led by Brianna Ramsey, Jennifer Schultz,

and Prescilla Reid, held the Dirty Rotten Strawberries in check, although

it took a chest stop by Schultz in front of the Backstreet Girls goal on

the game’s final game to secure the victory.

“I’m very proud of the girls because they played with a lot of heart and

like true champions,” Backstreet Girls Coach Mario Cretikos said.

Silver Bullets 2, Sky Fighters 0

Goals by Jacob Pelle and Stephen Figarsky helped get the Silver Bullets

past the Sky Fighters and into the division’s championship match. Goalie

Eric Wolfe was credited with the shutout and strong defensive

performances were given by Michael Almanza, Trevor Patterson, Ryan

Schiller, Scott Sorenson, and Sean Tafolla. The play of Eric Dyson, Ryan

Andrews, Joshua Pelle, and Jarrick Goldhamer also contributed to the

victory.

The Silver Bullets will play for the championship next Tuesday (Nov. 30)

at Perry Elementary School in Huntington Beach. Match time is 6:30 p.m.

UNDER-10 DIVISION

Tsunami 0, Big Blue Wrecking Crew 0

Tsunami goalies Brett Webber and Billy Sahagen had six and two saves,

respectively, to keep the Big Blue Wrecking Crew off the scoreboard in a

regular-season finale at Giesler Elementary School in Huntington Beach.

Big Blue Wrecking Crew goalie Eric Woodworth also had a big day in the

net with eight blocks.
