Newport Beach resident and political activist Rose Levinson died Nov. 21.

She was 90.

One of six children born to Bessie and Nathan Sepsenwol, Mrs. Levinson

was born on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1909, in Ohio.

Desperately wanting to escape the cold climate, Mrs. Levinson moved to

California in 1944. A graduate of Ohio State University, she was a dancer

with the university’s “Scarlet Masque,” a performing arts team. While

part of the dance troupe during the Roaring ‘20s, she danced the

Charleston and the Black Bottom.

While living in Newport Beach, Mrs. Levinson was a faithfulcongregant of

Temple Bat Yahm for 26 years. Many of her close friends from the OASIS

Senior Center attended her memorial service on Nov. 24. At OASIS, Mrs.

Levinson participated in geography and dance classes.

“She was such a teacher,” said her son, Larry Levinson. “She was just

such a remarkable woman.”

Mrs. Levinson was very active in local politics and social issues.

Mrs. Levinson was buried at Forrest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. A

quiet memorial tribute was later held at her Newport Beach home.

Mrs. Levinson is survived by her daughter, Natalie Bernard of Los

Angeles; son Larry Levinson and daughter-in-law Karina Levinson of

Newport Beach; grandchildren Joel and Mark Levinson of Huntington Beach;

and great-grandchildren Domenique, Richard and Matthew.

Donations can be made in her honor to Beit T’shuvah, 8831 Venice Blvd.,

Los Angeles 90034. Beit T’shuvah is a rehabilitation home for

drug-addicted youths.
