AT ISSUE: City Council OKd expense to boost employee morale.

I was not very happy when I read “City OKs $10,000 bash for city

employees.”

That was absurd -- money used out of our taxes to party with. On the

front page of the Independent, it showed this story and “Holding out for

a bond.”

I am a grandmother. I voted to pass Measure A to fix the schools in

Huntington Beach. It was not a surprise to me that it did not pass.

I am sure that when people knew that the city could have $10,000 for a

bash, they voted against the measure. It is quite sad.

When I worked for TRW, they gave us a Christmas party to lift our

spirits. Each person in the department brought a casserole and the time

given to us was our lunch hour, that we would’ve had anyway. Then we

returned to our jobs.

Editor’s note: The Huntington Beach Union High School District, not the

city of Huntington Beach, sought approval of Measure A, the school bond

issue.

I think it’s ridiculous to spend money on a party for city employees. The

next time they ask for bonds or a raise in anything, let’s say no.

And looking at who’s on the City Council, I think it’s a good time to

vote them out.

Alrighty then, am I dumb or what?

The party will now cost $20,000 because the city didn’t realize the

amount of time its employees would have to spend fixing up a room in the

vacant Broadway building where the party will be held. I bet for that

money they could rent a hall or restaurant, and the employees would not

have to clean it up or bring their own food as they are now. I bet they

could even have some entertainment and then maybe it would be a real

party.

If the employees’ morale is “low” now, I wonder how it makes them feel

that the city is throwing them a party that they have to prep for.

I guess the next thing would be for the residents to shower the City

Council with praises for this great idea and encourage them to do this

every year. Their theme could be: “Life is a Lemon and I Want My Money

Back.”BEVERLY GAGNE
