13-10, despite losing every statistical battle in the CIF Division V

semifinal.

In the first meeting of the year between the two longtime rivals, Corona

del Mar’s boys basketball team defeats Estancia, 61-59, to reach the

finals of the Daily Pilot Tip-off Classic. Brian Fracalosy leads CdM with

24 points and Zack Richardson scores 13 for the Eagles.

Estancia’s boys basketball team does win its first three games, defeating

Capo Valley, 67-55, Troy, 59-49, and Verdugo Hills, 71-35. Chris Candlish

leads the Eagles against Capo Valley, Greg Foster provides a spark off

the bench against Troy, and Kevin Byrne scores 17 against Trabuco Hills.

Newport Harbor wins its first boys basketball game by one point against

Westminster as Wes Budarek hits the winning shot for the Sailors.

Costa Mesa’s boys basketball team drops its opener, 82-55, to Mission

Viejo. Terry Carmone’s 14 points leads the Mustangs.

The Mustangs’ girls basketball team win its opener, 45-41, over

Westminster. Koo Kim scores 18 and Kerri Lurmann grabs 14 rebounds for

Costa Mesa.

Newport Harbor’s girls basketball team also wins its opener, 61-33, over

La Serna. Jenny Jennings scores 15 for the Sailors.

The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team wins its opener, 79-76,

over Chaffey. Bryan Singleton hits clutch free throws to seal the win for

the Pirates.

Ten years ago

Corona del Mar stuns top seed Sunny Hills, 27-0, in the CIF football

semifinals. The unranked Sea Kings become the first team to score more

than seven points against Sunny Hills. Weston Johnson scores three

touchdowns for CdM. Kevin Murphy and Mike Kelly recover fumbles for the

Sea Kings.

Orange Coast College’s Tyrone Youngblood, Shane Talbert and Mark Fely are

named All-Mission Conference in football.

CdM’s girls volleyball team advances to the state semifinals with a

three-game victory over Poway. Danielle Everett’s 25 kills lead the Sea

Kings. Tracy Schriber has 12 kills and Cristen Walley serves five aces.

CdM falls in the semis to Lynbrook of San Jose in five games.

OCC’s men’s soccer team advances to the state championship with a 1-0 win

over American River. Goalie Ken Langworthy makes key saves, and Paul

Oldham scores the lone goal.

CdM’s boys soccer team win its opener, 2-0, against Woodbridge with goals

from Justin Pierce and Chris Smith.

Estancia also wins, 2-0, over Trabuco Hills. Cesar Ovando and Sergio

Suarez score the two Eagles’ goals.

CdM’s girls cross country team finishes third at the state meet. Kirsten

McFarland and Johanna Wallin finish in the top 20 for CdM.

OCC’s women’s basketball team wins its opener, 72-43, over Moorpark. Kari

Bigler scores 14 for the Pirates.

Newport Harbor’s boys basketball team drops its first game to Long Beach

Jordan, 78-66. Paig Parish (20 points) and Huy Nguyen (16), lead the

Sailors.
