COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High freshman Sharon Day made her varsity

debut with a goal and an assist to help the host Mustangs handle

Saddleback, 4-0, in a nonleague girls soccer game Thursday.

Day’s corner kick set up senior Candace Nicholson’s goal to open the

scoring, then Day converted herself to make it a 2-0 halftime lead.

Juniors Sarah Smallcomb and Katie Roche added second-half goals and the

defense earned praise from Coach Dan Johnston.

Margaret Landeros (two saves) and Nichelle Janti (one) split the

goalkeeping duties, while Fernanda Valazco was an offensive catalyst.

Lisa Dunn added an assist for the Mustangs (1-0), who host Long Beach

Wilson Saturday at 10 a.m.
