MILLENNIUM MOMENT

In 1926, Harry J. Bauer needed to make some repairs to his yacht. But in

Newport Beach, there was nowhere to do that kind of work. So Bauer bought

property on what had previously been James McFadden’s corral and feed

yard, built a boatyard, and made the repairs. That was how things were

done in the ‘20s.

The boatyard eventually became the South Coast Boat Building Company.

Bauer, along with his colleagues Dr. Walton Hubbard, Walter Hubbard Jr.

and John Millner expanded its operation to produce many varieties of

boats. The company was one of the early businesses that helped to make

Newport a center of all things nautical.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
