* Tom Riley: Chairman of the board of supervisors, passed away in 1998.

* Robert Citron: County treasurer, disappeared from the public eye after

he was sentenced to house arrest for his role in the county’s bankruptcy.

Lives in Santa Ana.

* Bill Popejoy: Emergency replacement for Citron, quit after three months

to run the California State Lottery until last year. Still lives in

Newport Beach and is rumored to be starting up a venture with former

Orange County Sherrif Brad Gates.

* John Hedges: Mayor of Newport Beach, moved to Virginia with his family

earlier this year after being termed-out in 1998.

* Ed Decker: Chairman of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District Board

of Education, moved to Tustin when he left the board.

* Susan Temple: Costa Mesa’s director of finance, who Moorlach asked to

resign after he was proven right about the county’s pool, died in October

1997 after battling viral encephalitis.

* Lynne Fishel: Newport Beach resident and assistant to former county

Chief Executive Ernie Schneider, now works as deputy director of the

Orange County Building Industry Assn. in Irvine. Her strangest memory in

the CEO’s office: “The day the district attorney came in and took all of

our computers.”
