Five years ago

Newport Harbor High’s football team wraps up its 14-0 season with a 20-15

win over Servite, thus capturing the CIF Southern Section Division V

Championship. Brian Johnson and Mike Freeman score touchdowns for the

Sailors. In the fourth quarter, Tom Eaton gets a sack and forces a fumble

recovered by Jack Hogan to seal the victory.

Newport Harbor’s girls volleyball team wins the CIF Division I state

championship with a 15-14, 16-14, 15-10 victory over St. Mary’s of

Stockton. Misty May, the state MVP, leads the Sailors with 21 kills and

10 digs. Melissa Schutz gets 11 kills for Newport Harbor.

Estancia’s boys basketball team wins the third-place game in the Daily

Pilot Tip-off Classic against Newport Harbor, 57-37. Zack Richardson,

Kevin Byrne, Greg Foster and Chris Candlish all score in double digits in

a balanced Eagles’ attack. Wes Badorek scores 12 for the Sailors.

Costa Mesa’s boys and girls basketball teams both win on the same night.

The boys crush Anaheim, 63-37, as Bryan Leahy scores 14 points for the

Mustangs. Koo Kim scores a career-high 25 points in the girls team’s

63-57 win over Gahr.

In boys water polo, CdM’s Thad Buzolich, Adam McFarland and James Palda,

and Newport Harbor’s Gabe Wyatt, are named to the All-CIF Division I

first team. Costa Mesa’s Robert Grayeli is named to the Division II first

team.

Ten years ago

Corona del Mar High’s football team becomes the first at-large team to

win a CIF Southern Section championship with a 21-10 victory over La

Quinta in the Division VI title game.

CdM’s Todd Kehrli runs for a touchdown and passes to Weston Johnson for

another, and Brian Lucas scores on a 94-yard touchdown run for the Sea

Kings. Mark Perlmutter picks off a La Quinta pass on CdM’s 3-yard line in

the fourth quarter on a huge defensive play.

Orange Coast College’s men’s and women’s soccer teams both win state

championships. The men defeat Fresno City College, 3-2. Andy Strouse

scores two goals for OCC. For the women, Kim Dutton scores the only goal

in a 1-0 Pirates’ victory over Consumnes River College.

Southern California College’s 20-game home winning streak finally comes

to an end with an 88-86 loss to Christian Heritage. Jeff Bickmore scores

25 for the Vanguards.

Guty Heredia scores 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to almost

lead Estancia’s boys basketball team to a comeback win over Loara, but it

falls, 65-60, in the Garden Grove tournament. The Eagles defeat Bolsa

Grande, 69-31, behind Mike Haas’ 21 points in the consolation bracket.

CdM’s Brandon Howald is the CIF 4-A player of the year in boys water

polo. Teammates Gunnar Gustafson and Ryan Weir are named to the first

team, and Newport Harbor’s Tom Nichols is also a first-team member.

CdM’s Danielle Everett is named MVP of the All-Orange County team in

girls volleyball.
