COSTA MESA - The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team produced one of

its biggest victories in recent memory Monday, blanking nonleague visitor

Irvine, 2-0.

Julie Kroening scored in the first 30 seconds off an assist by Sharon Day

and Katie Roche was credited with an goal when an Irvine defender

directed the ball into her own net to finalize the scoring.

“This is a solid win for us,” Mesa Coach Dan Johnston said. “They’re a

tough team, but we kept up with them.”

Margaret Landeros had eight saves to get the shutout for Mesa (2-0-1).

Also, the Mustangs’ Lisa Dunn converted a Day assist in the 74th minute

to tie nonleague visitor Long Beach Wilson, 1-1, Saturday.

Mesa visits highly regarded former Pacific Coast League rival Aliso

Niguel today.

“That should be a test,” Johnston said of today’s game.
