CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team, regarded

as one of the most improved teams in Orange County, faced an extremely

tough midterm when Woodbridge, the favorite to grab the No. 1 ranking in

the CIF Southern Section Division II poll, arrived Tuesday.

The Sea Kings were up to the task and continuously attacked the Warriors,

but Woodbridge ultimately got the 3-1 victory.

“I don’t think we can play many games like this and lose,” CdM Coach Ron

Evans said.

CdM (3-1-1) had slightly more attacking time than Woodbridge (2-0),

thanks to a second half when the Sea Kings pressed on offense. CdM’s

defense was also solid, behind the goaltending of Britta Vogele, who had

14 saves.

But the Warriors converted on their opportunities in a timely matter,

using speed to create shots. Specifically, it was Woodbridge’s Janelle

Loudat who broke free for two goals.

Loudat only got three shots on goal for the entire game, as Lauren

Shepherdson kept her contained. But Loudat scored on two of her shots.

Her goal in the first half off a counter from a CdM corner kick was the

deciding goal in the game.

“I thought our defense played extremely well,” Evans said. “One of their

goals came off the counter. Another came off the offside trap. Those were

the only two times we got beat.”

CdM almost grabbed a 1-0 lead to start the game when Elisha Morgan and

Julia Livingston almost knocked in a throw-in from Jacqueline Becker.

CdM did take the 1-0 lead moments later when sophomore Allison Harvey

scored off a beautiful pass from Kate Simon. But Loudat tied up the game

when she knocked in a rebound. She then got her counter goal to give

Woodbridge the 2-1 halftime lead.

CdM was on the attack at the start the second half. The Sea Kings got

another close opportunity when Harvey had a clean shot at the goal, but

Woodbridge goalie Janette Hendricks made a good diving stop.

CdM had another opportunity to tie when Olivia Mazura had a shot off a

two-on-one. But the shot was deflected away. Woodbridge then responded,

peppering CdM with shots. When Kelly Orosz scored on a breakaway, it

sealed the game for Woodbridge.

“Overall, I was happy with the way we played,” Evans said. “We got

unlucky. We had a couple of opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize.

While most teams would be thankful for putting up with Woodbridge once,

Evans says otherwise.

“We got better play then them. I do wish we had another opportunity

against them.”
