The Huntington Beach Community Services Department has invited Santa

Claus to visit Surf City again this year through Dec. 22. Candy canes and

picture opportunities will be offered. Appointments for home visits from

Santa are available 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday. The 15-minute, $20 visit includes a Santa visit for

STREET SWEEPING

Huntington Beach streets will be swept twice a month until Jan. 3, 2000.

Any cars parked in the path of the sweeper will receive a warning parking

citation as a reminder of the service. Sweeping times are posted on

PEPPERONI, CHEESE AND TOYS

Papa John’s Pizza has teamed up with Toys For Tots and JAKKS Pacific Inc.

to bring a happy holiday season to needy children. Papa John’s “We

Deliver! You Deliver!” holiday program gives people the chance to make a

donation to Toys For Tots, without ever having to leave home. When

customers order their next pizza from Papa John’s, a Papa John’s delivery

person will drop off their pizza and take their toy donation right at

their door. JAKKS Pacific will match all toys collected by Papa John’s.

Customers will also receive a coupon for a free pizza on their next

order.

Customers will also be entered in a grand prize drawing. One grand prize

winner will receive a home theater system.

The program runs through Dec. 19. Coupons will be valid for redemption

through Jan. 31. Papa John’s has two locations in Huntington Beach, 16105

A DIFFERENT KIND OF HOLIDAY GIFT

Huntington Beach and neighboring city residents can get an early jump on

the gift-giving season at the ultra-low flush toilet giveaway. It runs

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, at the Huntington Beach water operations

yard, 19001 Huntington St. People who can ensure they will have their new

toilets installed within a month are eligible for up to three ultra-low

flush toilets, including wax ring, bolts and installation information.

Customers will need to bring a current water bill and a photo ID. Old

toilets must be returned to the water operations yard from 9 a.m. to 3

p.m. Jan. 8

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CITIZEN’S BUREAU

The Citizen’s Bureau of Investigation announced the appointment of John

Boag, as the group’s third executive director. The group was founded by

William Mello in 1994 to investigate public waste, fraud and abuse in

PRAYER FOR PEACE

Congregation B’nai Tzedek of Fountain Valley will host the members of the

Huntington Beach Church of Religious Science in a Service for Peace on

Dec. 31. On the last day of 1999 at noon Greenwich Mean Time, 4 a.m.

Pacific Standard Time, people of all faiths throughout the world will

join in a prayer for peace. The community is welcome to this predawn

BOLSA CHICA BOOK PARTY

The Bolsa Chica Land Trust is inviting members and friends to a

celebration party for the book “Celebrate the Bolsa Chica” from 3 to 5

OPERATION SANTA CLAUS

Operation Santa Claus and Senior Santas & Friends Gift Collection --

Orange County, needs your help! Drop off gift certificates, cash

donations and unwrapped gifts suitable for children, teenagers, or senior

citizens at any of the 27 branch libraries in Orange County, now through

Dec. 22. Contributions are tax-deductible, and can make a big difference

in the holiday joy of a friend or neighbor. All branch libraries will be

closed Dec. 24 and 25 for Christmas, and Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for the New

Year.

STORYTELLER AT FOUNTAIN VALLEY LIBRARY

Troubadour and storyteller Ken Frawley will entertain all ages at 2 p.m.

Dec. 18 with his holiday songs and tales. Audience participation is

encouraged and the Friends of the Fountain Valley Library will provide

GRANTS FOR TREE SOCIETY

The Huntington Beach Tree Society received two grants for their tree

planting program from the California ReLeaf 2000 Tree Planting Grant

Program and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The first grant of $4,160 will be used to buy and plant 84 trees at

Seacliff Elementary School. The tree planting is scheduled for Jan. 19,

2000. The second grant, for $2,663, will be used for educational

materials to increase the public’s awareness of the benefits of trees and

OPERATION SANTA CLAUS

The Fountain Valley Library’s Operation Santa Claus is offering the

opportunity for residents to give back to the community. Donors can take

an Angel Tag from the gift tree and provide a gift to a needy infant,

child, young adult or senior citizen. The gifts will be given to children

who are unable to spend the holidays with their natural families for a

variety of reasons, including neglect, abuse and abandonment. Senior

citizens in need of some friendly cheer and handicapped persons who have

no family or friends will also benefit from donations. The library asks

people to stop by at 17635 Los Alamos, pick an Angel Tag from the gift

tree, and return the tag with an unwrapped gift or check by Dec. 22. For

TURKEY RAFFLE

Free 10-pound turkeys are being raffled off every Saturday until Dec.

18th at Disc-O-Tires, 17131 Beach Blvd., Huntington Beach. No purchase is

necessary and only one entry per person will be accepted. Members of the

community can enter the contest 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday,

Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Disc-O-Tires.

CLASSES AT COMPUTER CENTER

The Computer Training Center of the Huntington Beach Adult School is

taking registration for their next session, which begins Jan. 3. Classes,

geared to meet the needs of novice and experienced computer users, are

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Sts. Simon and Jude’s Music Ministry will present their third annual

Voices of the Season Concert. It will be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 18th.

Conducted by Dr. Gary Busby, the program will include a chamber

orchestra, the 80-voice parish choir, children’s choir, the parish hand

bell choir and children’s hand bell choir. Refreshments will be served

after the concert. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the parish

office for $10, $5 for children, and will also be available at the door.

CELEBRATE WINTER SOLSTICE

Come join in the sacred journey of sending this year off with love and

appreciation. The evening will consist of the heartbeat of drumming; a

medicine wheel ceremony; meditation, chanting and toning.

The celebration will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., with registration at 6:30

p.m., Dec. 21st, at the Big Spirit Longhouse, 210 Adams Ave., Huntington

Beach. The cost is $10 per person preregistered, $15 per person at the

door.

COASTAL CALENDARS FOR SALE

The California Coastal Commission is offering a coastal calendar

featuring award-winning photographs of the California coastline. “The

California Coast Year 2000 Calendar” features winners from the California

Coastal Commission Photography Competition. Money raised will benefit

marine and coastal protection and education. Calendars are now on sale

for $10 from the Bolsa Chica Interpretive Center on Warner Avenue. To

NEW PLANTS AT BOLSA BAY

Several new species of plants were added to the Outer Bolsa Bay wildlife

community, thanks to $1,500 donated by Aera Energy. The Bolsa Chica

Conservancy is also looking for more volunteers and $1,500 matching funds

SCOUTS LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD GIRLS

Girls age 5 to 17 are welcome to join one of the several Girl Scout

Troops of Orange County. Through the Girl Scouts, girls will learn

self-esteem, leadership skills and social responsibility, as well as make

SEXUAL ASSAULT COUNSELORS WANTED

The California Service Programs’ Sexual Assault Victim Services and

Prevention program is looking for volunteer sexual assault counselors.

For a $35 materials charge, volunteers receive a 48-hour state certified

training in crisis intervention, medical procedures, law enforcement

procedures, legal procedures and cultural diversity. Training will be

BALLY’S TEAMS WITH TOYS FOR TOTS

Bally Total Fitness is promoting the season of giving this year with its

contributions to the “Toys for Tots” campaign. Bally’s is offering a

serving as collection points for the U.S. Marine Corps’ annual “Toys for

ADOPT-A-FAMILY

The Catholic Charities of Orange County are looking for participants in

this year’s Adopt-A-Family for Christmas. The organization is asking for

donors to provide gifts for their “adopted” family, along with the

makings for a Christmas dinner. The Catholic Charities will also be

holding a Children’s Day Christmas Party, where they will be handing out

FOOD DRIVE

The second half of the Huntington Beach Masonic Lodge No. 380 food drive
