A patriotic term

FOUNTAIN VALLEY -- Guy Carrozzo was sworn in as mayor on Tuesday,

dedicating his year to the nation’s veterans.

Carrozzo has served on the City Council for the past nine years. His

first turn in the mayor’s seat was 1995.

The only promise Carrozzo has made as mayor is to conduct himself with

the same honor and dignity he demonstrated as an educator. Through the

dedication of his term to veterans, he plans to bolster patriotism within

the city.

After his installation, Carrozzo unveiled one of the new patriotic

banners that will hang above city sidewalks. The red, white and blue

banners picture an eagle’s head below a U.S. flag. The banners read

“Fountain Valley Honors Our Veterans.” The 26 flags will be raised along

Brookhurst Street from Edinger to Warner avenues, as well as in front of

city hall. They will first fly after the holidays.

“I want to try and get out to schools and businesses to put the flag on

the agenda in everything they do,” said Carrozzo, who wore a

stars-and-stripes-patterned tie and matching suspenders.

Flying U.S. flags, Carrozzo said, would be a way of showing respect for

veterans and letting them know that their heroic deeds are not forgotten.

He hopes to see the U.S. flags on every home, school and business in the

city.

Carrozzo holds a long list of achievements as an educator and was helped

guide the city to adopt its 20-year general plan. He was also successful

in spending only $3,500 for all three of his political campaigns.

The 67-year-old served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. As a

retired Westminster school principal, the mayor is adamant about not

being called a politician.

“I’m a retired school principal just doing what I like to do,” continuing

to serve the community, he said.

The 35-year-resident is proud of his new position. He raised his two

children with his wife of 45 years in Fountain Valley.

“This is something that I’m very proud of, that my grandchildren will

remember about me,” he said.
