McGough takes over as city school board president

The Huntington Beach City School District’s annual organizational meeting

Tuesday night saw big changes to the board and staff.

The one-year term the board of trustees presidency passed from Robert

Mann to Catherine McGough.

Mann was lauded by fellow board members for his fairness during his term.

In other staff news, Lynn Bogart was approved by the board to fill the

vacancy left by Gary Rutherford, the outgoing director of curriculum and

instruction.

Bogart came from the Irvine Unified School District, where she held a

similar position.

She will begin in January.

The board also unanimously approved several summer sessions for 2000.

One session will be mandatory for seventh- and eighth-grade students who

have been retained or are at risk of being retained.

A core academic enrichment program for general education students

enrolled in grades two through seven will also be offered.

Remedial instruction for students enrolled in grades two through six, who

have low test scores, is also scheduled.

Also approved by the board was an agreement with Golden West College to

provide public school health experiences for students registered in the

community college’s nursing program. Students will work with the district

nurse and will participate in health screenings, health promotion and

immunization clinics.
