Heat outduels Fountain Valley rival

The Heat opened their 1999-2000 season on a successful note Sunday,

defeating Fountain Valley No. 6, 40-33, in the opening weekend of

Fountain Valley National Junior Basketball (NJB) boys Division I play.

Forward Matthew Derocili scored a game-high 10 points and also collected

eight rebounds and a pair of assists to lead a Heat attack that also

featured 10 rebounds, five points, and two assists from Robert Macksoud.

The Heat also received strong outside shooting from guards Richard

Martinez and Viet Nguyen, who finished with seven and six points,

respectively.

Big 5 40, Hornets 33

The Big 5 outscored the Hornets by eight points in the fourth quarter to

rally to victory. Jason Urbaniec scored 15 points, Brad Young scored

seven points to go along with eight rebounds, and Keith Christensen

grabbed nine rebounds and scored four points to lead the Hornets in their

opener.

DIVISION 2

Spurs 50, Lakers 33

Max Rudzwick powered his was to 16 points, 20 rebounds, and two assists

to pace a balanced Spurs attack that also saw Sean Carroll score 13

points, grab 10 rebounds, and hand out six assists, and Jason Lidman

match eight points with eight rebounds for the winners.

DIVISION 3

Hornets 39, Calvary Chapel 12

Dillon Gearin outscored Calvary Chapel, 14-12, and defensive pressure by

Matt Empting, Zachary Yelunois, Ryan McNicol, and Shane Armstrong helped

the Hornets cruise past the Hornets.
