CORONA DEL MAR - Former Costa Mesa High and Orange Coast College

standout Brent Mayne, a free agent following two seasons in San Francisco

and coming off the finest offensive year of his long major league career,

has agreed to a 3-year, $6-million contract with the Colorado Rockies,

sources said Thursday.

Mayne, a member of the Daily Pilot Sports Hall of Fame that is

celebrating the millennium, enjoyed career highs in 1999 in batting

average (.301), hits (97), at-bats (322), RBIs (39), doubles (32), runs

scored (39), walks (43) and games played (117).

A former No. 1 draft pick of the Kansas City Royals and member of Cal

State Fullerton’s 1988 College World Series team, Mayne has played nine

seasons in the majors, mostly with Kansas City. He also played one year

for the Mets and A’s.

Mayne’s 32 doubles in ’99 were the most by any National League

catcher, and his average stayed above .300 for almost the entire season.

Only four times after May 9 did his average dip below .300.

Attempts to reach Mayne at his Corona del Mar home Thursday were

unsuccessful. A Rockies public relations official said the team has yet

to make an announcement about the free-agent signing.

Mayne’s father, Mike, is OCC’s winningest baseball coach and is

currently a Pirate football assistant coach.
