Girls basketball: Newport wears out Jalupa Valley

IRVINE - Athena Vasquez had eight points, four assists and three

steals to lead Newport Harbor High’s girls basketball team to a 31-28 win

over Jalupa Valley in the consolation round of the South Coast Classic at

University High.

With the game close throughout, Newport (2-3) opened a five-point lead

with just over a minute remaining and held on for the win.

The Sailors next face the winner of the Torrance/Rubidoux contest

Saturday at 10 a.m. at University High.
