CORONA DEL MAR - Now that Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor High’s

girls soccer team are no longer Sea View League rivals, the two teams had

to settle for bragging rights this year. The host Sea Kings got to hold

onto it this year, defeating the Sailors, 2-1.

“The girls don’t like losing to CdM,” Newport Harbor Coach Jason Sorrell

said. “They’re friends and neighbors, but this is the third time in a row

CdM beat us, and the girls are not happy about that.”

It wasn’t easy for the Sea Kings (4-1-1). After a first half where they

outshot the Sailors, 8-3, and scored twice, Newport Harbor, which has

been outscored 5-0 in first halves this season, played frantically in the

second, but to no avail.

“We came out more intense (in the first half),” Sorrell said. “We didn’t

give them any room. In the first half, we gave them lots of room to

create lots of opportunities. We have to learn to play two halves instead

of one. Hopefully, that’ll come around.”

CdM’s first goal came when Kristin Hanson was knocked down in the goalie

box. Molly O’Meara converted the ensuing penalty shot for the game’s

first goal.

The lead doubled when Allison Harvey found herself in front of the goalie

and knocked in the shot. CdM had a massive advantage in attacking time,

and Newport Harbor’s frustration showed with a yellow card. But CdM only

got two goals.

“We did a good job in the first half,” CdM Coach Ron Evans said. “We

capitalized on our opportunities. We only got two goals though, and that

kept them in it.”

Newport Harbor (0-3-1) came out strong in the second, getting three quick

shots on goal. On a free kick, a sharp high shot by Newport’s Tory

Manchester bounced off the crossbar.

The Sailors got on the scoreboard on a corner kick, with Satya Tweena

setting up an easy goal for Lauren Kauth. After the goal, the game

settled into a physical defensive battle, and CdM held on to win.

For CdM, freshman midfielder Elisha Morgan did a solid job pushing the

ball up. Newport Harbor got solid defense from Emily Eastmond and

Meredith Miller.

CdM goalie Britta Vogele had 10 saves in the win. Newport Harbor goalie

Amy Niles had 11 saves, including one diving save off a Kate Simon shot.
