Tars find the fountain of youth

NEWPORT BEACH - Hope springs eternal for Newport Harbor High’s
girls soccer team. Despite losing eight seniors from last year’s team,
the Sailors will be bolstered by three talented freshmen added to a young
athletic lineup.
Forward Amy Burlingham, and midfielders Taryn Flamson and Tricia Orth are
the three newcomers who have injected the Sailors with some skills.
“They can add a lot,” Newport Harbor Coach Jason Sorrell said about the
three freshmen. “I saw them play on club teams. My team played against
them quite a few times, and they’re quite impressive.”
Another newcomer who figures to make a sizable contribution is junior
transfer Satya Tweena.
“She’s a tremendous talent,” Sorrell said.
On this young team, sophomores Amy Ross and Tory Manchester qualify as
veterans, and they will be looked upon to provide leadership on the
field. Ross is the team’s key returnee whose versatility has impressed
her coach.
“Ross can play anywhere,” Sorrell said. “She’s good going to the ball,
and can win the ball for you.”
Manchester is a determined player and one of the hardest workers on the
team.
“She’s a workhorse,” Sorrell said. “She always gives 100%. She never
gives up.”
Both Ross and Manchester are the silent types, but their play drives the
team. Tory’s sister, junior Liz Manchester, is a key player in the
starting lineup. The field general for the Sailors is senior Lauren
Birchfield, an aggressive midfielder.
The starting goalie is junior Amy Niles, another aggressive player who is
fundamentally sound. Backing her up is senior Heather Metcalf.
“Niles is a strong presence in goal,” Sorrell said.
The defense is led by senior Emily Eastmond and junior Meridith Miller.
Junior Laura Kauth adds speed at midfield, while Colleen Farrell plays on
the back line.
Seniors Kellie Abbott, Terra McIntosh and Andrea Corkhill bring
experience to the team. Junior Natalie St. Andre, fresh off the cross
country season, and sophomore Katie Yeager, should also contribute.
With a lot of youth coming joining a team that went 9-12-1 last year,
this could be seen as a rebuilding year for the Sailors. But Sorrell
doesn’t see it that way.
“I hope we can make the playoffs,” Sorrell said. “I hate to call it a
rebuilding year. We only have players for four years.”
“With Laguna Hills, Aliso Niguel, Woodbridge and Irvine in our league, it
won’t be any easier, but we have the players to do it.”
