SURF CITY RESIDENT DANCES IN NUTCRACKERSan Francisco Ballet School

student Brittney Benington of Huntington Beach will dance in the school’s

1999 production of “The Nutcracker.”

The ballet’s dancers have committed themselves to long days and weekends

of rehearsals to perform this children’s classic.

JAMES ELECTED TO STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD

Susan M. James, Coast Community College District student trustee, has

been elected to the California Community College Trustees Board of

Directors.

She will serve a one-year term.

The trustee board is a statewide association comprising California

community college board members.

The organization endeavors to develop unified decisions on key

educational issues and to monitor and influence decisions affecting

California’s community colleges.

EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS

The Ocean View High School Parent Teacher Assn. will offer a series of

seminars early next year.

The meetings deal with a variety of issues facing students and teachers.

On Jan. 5, psychologist Dennis Murphy will address how to get

old-fashioned values back into children’s lives.

The seminar is called “A Parent’s Guide to Ethics and Respect -- Stop the

Madness.”

The class is offered in response to the rising level of violence on

school campuses.

On Feb. 15, the Ocean View PTSA will offer a seminar on Abstinence.

Fran Tracy of Beacon of Light, an interdenominational, nonprofit

organization that communicates Judeo-Christian principles, will offer a

presentation about abstinence that will help parents give their children

direction to make healthy decisions and to make the right choices.

Topics include sexually transmitted disease, HIV and AIDS, unwanted

pregnancy, abortion and emotional brokenness.

All meetings will be held at 7 p.m. at Ocean View High School, 17071

Gothard St., Huntington Beach.

OCC’S SPEECH TEAM WINS FALL CHAMPS TITLE

Orange Coast College’s speech and debate team reached the midway point of

its 1999-2000 competitive season by capturing the prestigious Fall

Championships Tournament, held Dec. 4 and Dec. 5 at California State Long

Beach.

The squad unseated the defending titleholder, the South Orange County

Community College District, in winning the 1999 crown. A total of 37 two-

and four-year colleges and universities took part in the tourney.

“We had a phenomenal tournament, and I attribute our win to the wonderful

effort expended by our coaches, volunteers and students,” said co-Head

Coach Georgie Monahan. “It was a synergistic endeavor. The team focused

and worked conscientiously for two weeks in preparation for last

weekend’s big tournament.”

Speakers will now take a break for the holidays and will return to the

second half of the campaign, beginning in February. The season will build

to a crescendo with the state and national tournaments scheduled for

March and April. The college’s squad is the defending state champion.

Chris Wright of Huntington Beach pulled down first-place awards in

readers theater and duo interpretation.

Shannon Pearce of Fountain Valley nabbed a gold in junior parliamentary

debate and was a finalist in informative speaking.

Jennifer Garcia of Huntington Beach finished second in informative

speaking.

Jon Stauber of Fountain Valley was a bronze medalist in junior impromptu

and reached the finals in junior extemporaneous and junior poetry.
