ISSUE: ANNUAL ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

Summary: Pam Walker was reelected as board president.
ISSUE: SCHOOL MODERNIZATION
Vote: 4-0, with Kanode absent
Summary: The board voted to receive information regarding a plan to
modernize Harbour View Elementary School during the 2000-2001 school
year.
Assistant Supt. Patricia Young indicated that the district’s application
for funds from the state’s Proposition 1A school facilities bond has been
approved and is expecting funds.
District architect Paul Wesberg has estimated that the budget for
modernizing Harbour View equals $2.3 million, of which 80% would be
covered by the state.
Wesberg made a presentation to the board about the possible modernization
of the site.
ISSUE: SUPPORT FOR WAL-MART LEASE
Vote: 4-0, with Kanode absent
Summary: The board adopted an official resolution supporting the
commercial zoning of the closed Crest View school site for a 65-year
lease.
Wal-Mart has expressed interest in leasing the site, but some community
members have opposed the lease.
A study by the school board determined that the long-term lease of the
site would generate $41 million over 65 years.
ISSUE: ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING
Vote: 4-0, with Kanode absent
Summary: The board approved the state’s English Language Acquisition
Program.
The program, which becomes effective in January, requires the state to
allocate $100 to each English language learner in the fourth through
eighth grades.
The districts’ eligibility for the funds is determined by the English
Language Development test.
